Lento, amargo animal -- Jaime Sabines (Chiapas, Mexico)

Lento, amargo animal
que soy, que he sido,
amargo desde el nudo de polvo y agua y viento
que en la primera generación del hombre pedía a Dios.

Slow, bitter animal
that I am, that I have been,
bitter since the knot of dust and water and wind
that in the first generation of men called for God.

Amargo como esos minerales amargos
que en las noches de exacta soledad
—maldita y arruinada soledad
sin uno mismo—
trepan a la garganta
y, costras de silencio,
asfixian, matan, resucitan.

Bitter like those bitter minerals
that in the nights of exact solitude--
--damned and ruined solitude
without myself--
cling to the throat
and crusts of silence
choke, kill, resucitate.

Amargo como esa voz amarga
prenatal, presubstancial, que dijo
nuestra palabra, que anduvo nuestro camino,
que murió nuestra muerte,
y que en todo momento descubrimos.

Bitter as that bitter voice,
prenatal presubstansial, who said
our word that went our way,
who died our death,
and that we discovered at all times.

Amargo desde dentro,
desde lo que no soy,
—mi piel como mi lengua—
desde el primer viviente,
anuncio y profecía.

Bitter from within,
from which I am not,
--My skin like my tongue--
since the first living thing,
omen and prophecy.

Lento desde hace siglos,
remoto —nada hay detrás—,
lejano, lejos, desconocido.

Slow since centuries ago,
Remote -there is nothing in the absence--,
Distant, far, unknown.

Lento, amargo animal
que soy, que he sido.

Slow, bitter animal
that I am, that I have been.
